Twelve year old Maimona is the first student to receive a high school education grant from YouMe Support Foundation. Maimona is the third child in a four child family.

Education in the tropical islands of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, are not free and only 18% of students got to go through high school. Maimona older sister was unable to go to high school, because of lack of funds and is forced to sit at home with no qualifications and no prospect of being able to get a job. There is no government assistance for the unemployed.

Maimona’s family managed to find enough money to put the one boy in the family through high school. He dreams of becoming a pilot.

Although Maimona is a bright and high achieving student, without assistance from charities like YouMe Support Foundation and Child Trust Fund, Maimona would be compelled to join her older sister at home. Many of the families in Vanuatu, a tropical island archipelago, tucked away in the North West corner of the South Pacific, live on under $1 a day.

Villagers in the far north of Vanuatu have tried in vain to send live coconut crabs to Port Vila, the capital, in order to raise money to send their children to school. The only airline to service the area, refuses to take the coconut crabs on board, even though the villagers have the money to pay the freight. The airline claims the live crabs pose a threat, as they are not sufficiently packaged.

Though many people in Vanuatu know the value of educating their children, finding the school fees is an ongoing nightmare.

Working with the local schools and education department, YouMe Support Foundation plans to put additional children each year, through an ongoing high school education grant program.
