Mother’s Day was first created by Anna Jarvis, an American who campaigned for one day to be set aside to honour mothers. This has become an almost universal tradition. It originated only at the start of the 20th century and not to be confused with the mother worship of ancient Greece.
Anna Jarvis, became so upset at the commercialization of the holiday, only 9 years after its inception, her and her sister spent their family inheritance campaigning against the holiday and both died in poverty. She said, “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother—and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment!”
Here are some out-of-the-ordinary ideas that may have even pleased Anna Jarvis. Pleases note we are not selling these items, just trying to stimulate you to think of other ideas, apart from flowers and candy (and give you a laugh at the same time).
