A short list of 15 finalists (from 35,000 applicants) spent the past four days on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in an extended interview. The finalists were required to snorkel through crystalline waters, gorge themselves at a beachside barbecue and relax in the island’s spa. They had to demonstrate their ability to blog, take swimming tests and sit through face-to-face interviews.
British charity worker, bungee jumper, marathon runner, adventure lover, scuba diver, ostrich rider and kisser of a giraffe, Ben Southall, was crowned Caretaker of Hamilton Island at a ceremony on the island.
Queensland Tourism Minister, Peter Lawlor said “Ben has shown a true passion for Queensland. He has ideas that will make the role his own.”
However, the contest has not been without its problems. The website crashed due to the deluge of visitors. The tourism department then came under fire when it unveiled a video of an application of a woman getting a tattoo, expressing her love of the Great Barrier Reef.
One finalist was put out after it was discovered she had connections to the adult entertainment industry. A prankster then set himself up as Osama bin Laden in a video on YouTube, stating why he should get the Best Job in the World.
Ben Southwall will now move into an airy three-bedroomed oceanfront villa, with a private pool and sweeping views of the surrounding islands. He will have his Canadian girlfriend with him for the six month duration of the job.
For all you hopefuls, who missed out on the Best Job In The World, there is a way you could have your very own piece of a tropical island, very similar to Hamilton Island. That’s even better than winning a six month contract. Quick, check it out now . Competition closing soon.
