There is an investigation underway in Australia, over claims that its navy sailors competed to see who could sleep with the most female crew members. The sailors allegedly competed with each other for cash prizes.
Sailors on board HMAS Success put a cash value on each woman’s head, according to Channel Seven news. It has now been confirmed that four members of the company, believed to be the instigators of the sex games, were removed from the ship in Singapore, in May, after female crew member laid complaints about the alleged sex games. The offenders were formally interviewed before leaving the vessel in Singapore.
The report said sleeping with a female officer, or a lesbian, or having sex in a strange place, scored higher points and won more money. A dollar value was placed on each woman’s head, during an overseas deployment in May. It is alleged that the sailors recorded their efforts in a book called The Ledger.
The Minstry of Defence would not confirm how many sailors were involved, except to acknowledge that a number of concerns raised by female crew members were “now subject to formal inquiry”.
“These alleged behaviours are disturbing but it’s important to get to the facts of it all,” said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
Deputy Prime Minister, Ms Julia Gillard says “I want a full investigation, so women do not feel excluded from serving their country. As a nation we have been saying for a long period we want men and women to be able to join the Army, the Navy and the Air Force and to have good careers in it. Clearly the complaints need to be investigated.”
It was during an equity and diversity health check that a number of concerns were raised by female crew members. These concerns have become the subject of a formal inquiry.
