Mara Carfanga, the one time contestant of Miss Italy and topless model, will act as hostess to the First Ladies of the world, at the forthcoming G8 Summit in Italy.
Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, continues his determination to shock the world, as he chooses Carfagna and another stunning beauty, Maria Stella Gelmini, his education minister, to support each other as hostesses at the summit. It is said Mr. Berlusconi chose the two women as a reward for being ‘staunch champions’, as he fought recent allegations that he had slept with high-class-call-girls last November. Mr Berlusconi has been described as Europe’s most sexist leader.
Four professors, Chaira Volpatro, Angelica Mucchi Fiana, Anne Maas and Marcella Ravenna says that Mr. Berlusconi’s behavior is a threat to the dignity of all Italian women. They have been open in their criticism of Mr. Berlusconi’s choice of starlets, actresses and models as candidates of the prime minister’s People of Freedom party. The four senior academics said “As citizens of Italy, of Europe and of the world, we appeal to the first ladies of the countries involved in the G8 Summit. We ask them to desert the Italian meeting, to affirm strongly and unambiguously that the de-legitimization of women in one country offends women of all countries.”

The G8 meeting has been moved from the plush new conference facilities in Sardinia, to a police training barracks outside L’Aquila, the region recently hit by an earthquake. The move was instigated by Silvio Berlusconi, so the plight of the 60,000 homeless from the earthquake would be brought to the world’s attention. Many of the homeless have objected to all the media attention, particularly in light of Berlusconi’s failure to follow through on his post-earthquake promises. They are stil living in make-do tent cities.
320 million euros had already been spent on the new buildings in Sardinia, in readiness for the G8 summit, but a further 50 million euros would be spent on preparing the barracks.
