Fine red dust was lifted off the red heart of the great continent of Australia and sucked 3 km into the sky, by a deep low-pressure system and gale force winds. The massive dust storm, carrying millions of tones of dust and dirt, was the biggest in 79 years.

Newt Gingrich’s 527 Group, American Solutions for Winning the Future, sent a congratulatory letter to porn executive and president of adult entertainment DVD studio, Pink Visual, Allison Vivas, telling her she was the winner of their ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ award. Vivas was invited to have an ‘intimate event’ with Gingrich. The letter told Vivas she would dine privately with Gingrich, who was looking forward to finally meeting Vivas face to face. It said Gingrich was keen to get Vivas’ thoughts on cap and trade and Obama’s tax policy.
Just hours later the award was withdrawn.
Crew and passengers were safely released from an Aeromexico’s Boeing 737-800 which had been briefly hijacked, by what at first appeared to be a group of religious fanatics.
After standing up to get luggage out of overhead bins the hijacker suddenly took control of the airplane. Forty-four year-old Bolivian man, José Mar Flores Pereira, threatened the pilot with a small box wrapped in tape.
The pilots then spoke to passengers over the PA system telling those on board that the plane had been hijacked and asking them to remain calm and in their seats. There was no yelling or sense of panic on the plane.
Residents of Simonbadi and Kirikutty, in the state of Orissa, in east India have been forced to flee to relief camps near the villages. Seven people have been killed and several others injured, while hundreds of homes have been trampled by a herd of 14 rampaging elephants. They have been causing chaos for over one month.
“We have housed over 500 people in two camps with adequate food and a medical team,” local administrator Krishen Kumar told AFP after visiting the camps. “Most people have lost their thatched houses, destroyed by the wild herd. We have the mandate to open more camps until the forestry department is able to dispel the elephants.”
