Rick and Wendy
discovered the URGENT NEED for education in the communities of the archipalego of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific.
Children in these isolated tropical islands left without a future, unable to enter the 21st Century. Children who will never see the inside of a high shool classroom. Because:
- Only some primary school teachers are provided by the government
- Some spasmodic education is available through volunteer organizations
- Everyone has to pay school fees - no free education
- One exercise book divided between several children
- Very few resources are available for the teachers
- No books are available for the children to read or write on
- Many parents are unable to read or write
- Pencils are cut into three.
This all sounded bad enough until we discovered:
- Only 55.8% of children get to year 6
- Only 18.2% go to High School
- 26% never go to school at all.
Most villagers live in a no-cash economy. There is no money to pay the fees. Yet the children dream of being doctors, nurses, teachers and pilots, like other children anywhere in the world.

Where?
Vanuatu, (once called the New Hebrides) is an archipelago of 83 tropical islands just three hours flight, North-East of Sydney, Australia. A country that was made famous by A Michener with his book 'Tales of the South Pacific'.
Vanuatu was named in 2006 as the Happiest Country on Earth on the Happy Planet Index. However, Daily Post reported 1st September 2007:
Prime Minister Lini admits lack of service delivery in outer islands.
Prime Minister Ham Lini has admitted that the government has not done enough to provide service delivery to 95% of the population in the islands. During a visit to the islands PM Lini received a lot of requests to help fund things like school buildings. Some of these requests are nothing more than Vt50,000 ($US500)."Some schools just needed maintenance, while others lacked basic school materials such as blackboard, exercise books and text books. In some cases there is no medicine available and no fuel for lighting. Residents on the islands are forced to rely on ancient custom methods.”
