Why a Foundation - Charity?

Rick and Wendy
discovered the URGENT NEED for education in the communities of the archipalego of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific.
Children in these isolated tropical islands are left without a future, unable to enter the 21st Century. Because many of the parents live on under $1 per day, the children who will never see the inside of a high shool classroom. This does not mean the parents are unahppy. Quite the opposite. They live in a wonderful pristine tropical paradise. The majority of their needs are met from the land they live on. However, some of the next generation have a desire to reach out and embace a wider world. The children dream of being doctors, nurses, teachers and pilots, like other children anywhere in the world. This is not possible because:
- Only some primary school teachers are provided by the government
- Some spasmodic education is available through volunteer organizations
- Everyone has to pay school fees - no free education in Vanuatu
- An exercise book divided between several children
- Very few resources are available for the teachers
- No books are available for the children to read or write on
- Many parents are unable to read or write
- Pencils are cut into three.
Vanuatu was named in 2006 as the Happiest Country on Earth on the Happy Planet Index. However, Daily Post reported 1st September 2007:
Prime Minister Lini admits lack of service delivery in outer islands.
Prime Minister Ham Lini has admitted that the government has not done enough to provide service delivery to 95% of the population in the islands. During a visit to the islands PM Lini received a lot of requests to help fund things like school buildings. "Some of these requests are nothing more than Vt50,000 ($US500). Some schools just needed maintenance, while others lacked basic school materials such as blackboard, exercise books and text books. In some cases there is no medicine available and no fuel for lighting. Residents on the islands are forced to rely on ancient custom methods.”
This all sounded bad enough until we discovered:
- Only 55.8% of children get to year 6
- Only 18.2% go to High School
- 26% never go to school at all.
From its inception Seachange Lodge has dedicated 10% of all profit to these far flung communities. You can check this out at our Community Project as we have been privileged to be able to help the communities with sewing machines, simple hand tool, basic first aid, school resources and of course the much needed school books, papers, pencils etc. After a hurricane hit the community earlier this year, they villagers were left without food. A frantic phone call from them (reverse charges) and we were able to get them some help. It is so important for these isolated communites to have an outside hand they can reach out to in times of real need.
What is YouMe Support Foundation doing?
YouMe Support Foundation is providing non-reapyable high school education grants through a once in a lifetime Blue Moon Opportunity. When we concieved the idea of raffling Seachange Lodge Resort on the Internet, it was a World First. That meant we were on our own and had to forge the pathway oursleves. It has been a challenge that has almost overcome us a couple of times, but we pressed on. We are thrilled to report that the first child will enter the programme in January 2009 and look forward to many other children following.
YouMe Support Foundation Child Trust Fund, is one of the few Foundations assisting these children to get a high school education, as we liase with the Education Department and other organizations working in the area from Peace Corp through to the European Union and Aus Aid.
